Everybody loves a good pub quiz, and one of the most popular ones on the calendar is organized by the Cayman Islands Humane Society, held every third Thursday of the month at Fidel Murphy’s Public House.
This month, the quiz is scheduled for Feb. 18, so start organizing your team and make a booking now to avoid disappointment as tables fill up quickly.
For the animals
The quiz night was started with the goal of raising funds to send animals off-island if they couldn’t be adopted here in Cayman. The society works with no-kill shelters in the U.S., and every few months another cohort of dogs is flown up in the hopes of finding forever homes. Last year, approximately 150 dogs were sent stateside, and the hope is to send even more this year as funds allow.
All money raised from the quiz usually goes to the Humane Society dog transfer fund unless otherwise announced on the night. In the past, for example, the organizers have used the money for an operation that one of the shelter dogs needed. Every cent goes directly to the Humane Society, as all aspects of the quiz, including the venue and the prizes, are volunteered or donated.
The night is usually really well attended and Fidel’s is packed. Around $1,000 is raised each month to go towards flying dogs up to the U.S., making a huge difference to the society’s coffers.
There are several rounds of questions, and all are general knowledge, but in different categories. In addition to the more traditional question and answer rounds, there’s usually a picture round, and sometimes a cryptic clues or a music round – it really is a little different each time so the event doesn’t get stale.
Prizes and raffle
Fidel Murphy’s very kindly donates prizes for the first and second placed teams, as well as donating the pub as the venue for the night. There is a $100 prize for first place and $60 for second. Third place also wins a prize – usually either a Humane Society baseball cap, a Nescafé mug, or a Heineken cap and glasses for each team member (the mugs and Heineken goodies are donated).
As well as the quiz, there is a raffle drawn at the mid-point of the night. Raffle tickets are $2 each or six for $10, and they’re sold at the same time as entry fees are collected. Raffle prizes are all generously donated by either local businesses or shelter volunteers, and include things like Regal Cinema vouchers, Red Sail sunset cruises for two, Heineken goodies, Books & Books vouchers, Casanova’s Gift Certificates, bottles of rum/champagne/wine, facials, mani-pedis, hats and sunglasses, mouse pads and key rings.
The quiz starts at 7 p.m. Entry is $10 per person and the maximum number of people on a team is six. Tables can be booked by calling Fidel Murphy’s at 949-5189.
