Culture at the Cinema continues its program of bringing ballet and theater stage performances to the Regal Camana Bay with a showing of “Taming of the Shrew” on Saturday.
Shakespeare’s classic take has been told in many different ways over the years, including as the musical “Kiss Me, Kate” with music and lyrics by Cole Porter. The 1999 film “10 Things I Hate About You,” starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger was also loosely based on the play.
This time, audiences will see the comedy transformed into a ballet, thanks to the magical choreography and dancers of the Bolshoi Ballet.
Many suitors dream of marrying the lovely and docile Bianca, including Luciento. However her father will not let anyone marry her before her elder sister, the ill-tempered shrew Katharina, is herself married. French choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot lands a coup with his adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy tailored specifically to the Bolshoi dancers, and achieves a magnetic two hours of breathtaking, nonstop dance unlike any other, portraying the Bolshoi’s audacity and energy in a completely new way. This new production was staged exclusively for the Bolshoi and cannot be seen anywhere else.
Tickets are $40 each and include a glass of bubbly. Due to licensing restrictions on the theater bar that will be available to patrons, no one under the age of 18 will be admitted.Doors open at 7 p.m. and show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Regal Camana Bay box office.
