You can’t have an island with a pub and no quiz being held there. Pub quizzes are a staple of British life, where teams get together to face off over a variety of trivia questions, sometimes with audio and visual accompaniment.

The Cayman Islands Humane Society is known for its regular quizzes, held at Fidel Murphy’s Pub in Queen’s Court Plaza on West Bay Road. These nights have become so popular that those in the know reserve their space early to avoid disappointment.

The next society quiz is scheduled for Aug. 18, and as ever, it promises to be a doozy.

Tons o’ trivia

With Nicola Walsh at the helm, trivia fans can prepare to do battle over subjects ranging from music to mathematics and sports to science. Teams of up to six people are allowed, and here’s an insider tip: try to man that team with members who have different strengths. There’s no point in having a whole bunch of geography and film aficionados for the times when football, rowing and rugby questions raise their ugly heads.

For many groups, the Humane Society quiz is marked on the calendar as a night not to be missed. If you become as keen as they, you’ll no doubt start recognizing familiar faces as you take your seat each time.

There are terrific prizes to be won, but most importantly, the entrance fees go toward transferring homeless dogs to the U.S. and their new lives. It’s a win-win for all.

If you are interested in signing up a team for the upcoming quiz, now is the time to pick up the phone and do so. There is limited space and a lot of regulars are on the ball. You have been warned.

The entrance fee is $10 per person, and teams are limited to six people. Call Fidel Murphy’s on 949-5189 to reserve your table, or email [email protected] for further information. For more information about the society, visit
