Cayman youth sailors bring home trophies, medals from Bahamas

Young competitors from the Cayman Islands Sailing Club and from the Bahamas show off their prizes from the Bahamas Optimist National Regatta last month.

Eight young competitors from the Cayman Islands Sailing Club brought home five trophies and medals from the Bahamas Optimist National Regatta held at the Nassau Yacht Club over the weekend of Oct. 1.

Among the more than 80 boats that raced, four Cayman sailors were participating in their first international regatta.

Will Jackson (St. Ignatius) fought hard at the top end of the Championship Fleet for seventh place in the Red Fleet, and Ava Hider (Cayman International School) and Fenna Madison (Cayman Prep) raced to 13th and 17th places, respectively, the club said in a press release.

Matheo Capasso (CIS) raced to a win in the Blue Fleet, with Charlotte Webster (CIS) placing third and Chloe Bentick-Lalli (Montessori) coming in sixth.

George Hider (CIS) placed first in Green Fleet, and Olivia Jackson (Prep) was second.

The sailors were coached by Rebecca Calvert.

“The weather was erratic and windy and the sailors did well to keep out on the choppy waters,” the press release said.
