Family festivities at gallery fair

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands has invited Cayman artisans to a special art fair on Saturday from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The Christmas Artisans Gift Fair is set to take place in the lower exhibition hall and features a wide variety of items. Highlights include bespoke jewelry by Bee Line Designs, crafted wood carvings by Len Layman, traditional thatch crafts by Lizzie Powell, local art prints and photographs, and publications such as the National Gallery’s new book, “The Art of the Cayman Islands.”

Activities

The fair will also feature a variety of family-oriented activities such as a ceramic ornament painting workshop on the hour, starting at 10 a.m., with the final session starting at noon. There is a materials fee from $5 per person.

In addition, there will be a free Christmas card station and special storytelling sessions by Cayman Brac native Martin Keeley (10:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.). These engaging performances will take place within an inflatable shark!

There will be enough on the schedule to keep all ages entertained.

“This is a great opportunity to take a break from your busy schedule to spend quality time with your family, get creative for Christmas and to support local artisans,” said National Gallery education intern Jessica Ebanks.

“Kids can take home their creations the very same day, as we’ll be using special non-fire glazes.”

Food and drink

Refreshments will be served by the National Gallery’s Art Café. In addition to healthy snacks and beverages, the Art Café will feature a special station where visitors can build their own s’mores and cook them over an outdoor fire. A hot chocolate station will also be set up, including all of the festive toppings such as marshmallows, cinnamon and more.

Supporting the gallery

Admission to the National Gallery’s Christmas Artisans Gift Fair is free. Money raised from sales help to support local crafters and allow the gallery to offer free admission and free public programming throughout the year. This includes access to exciting exhibitions.

Members are invited to special preview event and Christmas Party on Friday from 6-8 p.m. Ask how you can become a member.
