Emergency relief for Starbucks employees

Starbucks and local licensee Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited have launched an emergency relief programme for employees of the coffee shops who have been impacted by the COVID-19 crisis.

According to a press release, the Starbucks Global Partner Emergency Relief programme marks the first time company-operated and international market store employees can access hardship grants.

These one-time, direct relief grants will be made available to staff facing extreme hardship as a result of COVID-19 and help ensure that employees around the world have access to emergency support, the companies stated.

Cayman has one Starbucks outlet, which opened in August last year in Camana Bay.

Caribbean Coffee Traders Limited founding directors Adam Stewart and Ian Dear said in the release that it was their responsibility to continue providing support for staff members “that may be facing unexpected health and financial hardship during this time”.

The statement noted that the relief programme will be available through the Employee Assistance Foundation, an initiative created to provide a way for staff to receive assistance in times of crisis.

Starbucks staff in Cayman, Jamaica, and Turks and Caicos can request financial assistance from this fund to support them with medical expenses related to COVID-19, sudden loss of home, travel to visit a terminally ill family member, death of a family member or partner and related funeral expenses, and other extenuating circumstances, the company stated.

This local funding initiative is part of Starbucks Coffee Company’s commitment to donate $10 million to the Global Partner Emergency Relief programme, the release noted.
