It is a great privilege to be appointed by Her Majesty The Queen to serve the Cayman Islands as Governor, particularly during this time of global crisis.
In my Foreign office career I have experience of numerous crises, but none of us have ever experienced a crisis of the magnitude and severity created by coronavirus COVID-19.
Despite the extremely difficult circumstances we are facing, I am deeply moved by the resilience, responsibility and bravery shown by the residents of these islands.
Above all, I salute and thank our frontline and essential workers who have been toiling tirelessly to safeguard everyone’s health and safety. In my opinion, you are all heroes.
I commend the Premier for outstanding leadership and all our elected leaders, our civil service, which has stepped up impressively, and private sector teams who have been keeping our country running.
Additionally, I applaud the charities and the generous private individuals and businesses who have been extending assistance or a helping hand to those in need. I have truly come to understand the meaning of Caymankind.
This level of service takes extraordinary courage, energy and sacrifice. Please know that your efforts are recognised and appreciated by me and all of us in the Cayman Islands.
Social distancing, maintaining basic hygiene and protecting our elderly and vulnerable will remain with us until a vaccine has been developed. But I look forward to the time, hopefully in the near future, when we can come together to express our appreciation in person.
Until then, let us all cooperate to make sure each and every one of us stays safe and well. Together we are strong and we can beat this. Thank you to Team Cayman and everyone in our community playing their full part.
