Jasmine presents ‘Spotlight on Broadway’

Fundraiser promises great entertainment for all ages

The lights of The Great White Way in New York were finally switched back on in September, after theatres went dark for many months due to COVID.

Iconic shows such as ‘The Lion King’, ‘Wicked’ and ‘Chicago’ are now back in business, bringing audiences some much-needed entertainment in these pandemic times.

Jasmine (formerly Cayman HospiceCare) is doing the same, with its upcoming ‘Spotlight on Broadway’ performances, scheduled for 7-9 Oct. at the Harquail Theatre. In order to comply with government regulations on indoor gatherings, the organisation has the production running on three nights, giving everyone who wants to attend, the opportunity to do so.

In the past, Jasmine has presented ‘An Evening on Broadway’, ‘Nostalgia’ and ‘Voices Around the World’ to capacity houses, with local talent from singers to dance troupes on stage. This year promises to be just as entertaining, as dancers from the University College of the Cayman Islands, Miss Jackie’s Company Dancers, and the Singrays a cappella group are just a few of the acts set to perform. Solo artists such as Emily Mowray, Arek Nicholson, Caryn Caffarelli, Juliet Fenn, Riley Onday, Vanessa Hanson, Owen Henry and Matthew Pellow will also be featured.

It is always a fun, energetic affair, and often the audience joins in with familiar tunes. For example, expect to hear well-known songs from ‘Mamma Mia’, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ and ‘Jersey Boys’ as the night wends merrily on. No one can resist tapping their toes and humming along to a bit of ABBA.

The event is scheduled for that particular weekend in recognition of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (9 Oct.) and the Voices for Hospices movement, which was started by Sheila Hurton in 1989 in the UK. At the time, Hurton was looking to raise funds for the Princess Alice Hospice in Esher by staging a single ‘Come and Sing’ concert. Since then, the initiative has grown to become a global event. Jasmine is joining over 150 countries that participate in ‘Voices for Hospices’ every year, with each one presenting their own unique entertainment.

Producer of ‘Spotlight on Broadway’, Kerrie McMillan, applauded the work of all those who have contributed to the upcoming show.

Dancers perform numbers from well-known shows.

“Under the artistic direction of Miss Jackie, (who officially retired last year), our cast has volunteered their time and energy for many months,” she said. “Their enthusiasm and dedication to this production is heartwarming and, on behalf of Jasmine, I cannot thank them enough.”

Tickets have already been selling at a brisk pace, and the hope is for all three evenings to sell out.

About Jasmine
Jasmine is the only not-for-profit organisation in the Cayman Islands that provides dedicated palliative and end-of-life care to those in the community with a life-limiting illness. It relies almost exclusively on donations and fundraising events to ensure this care and support can be provided to any resident, completely free of charge, which is why the support and generosity of the residents here is so important.

As well as caring for patients in the comfort of their own homes, Cayman is fortunate to have a state-of-the-art in-patient facility – the Jasmine Villa – built by the community and available to patients and their families at their most vulnerable time. All funds raised through ‘Spotlight on Broadway’ will go directly towards these services.
