Cayman’s national amateur boxer Hepseba Angel will be spending eight weeks in Ireland, training under Cayman Islands Boxing Association development manager Liam Brereton.
Angel, 20, arrived in Ireland on 10 Oct. where she joined fellow Caymanian Brandy Barnes who has been there since early last month.
The duo will take part in an intense international training camp in preparation for the upcoming 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Angel, who is now 3-0 locally with a knockout to her credit, will step into the ring against elite boxers from Ireland, India and Barbados.
Grant Thornton, Angel’s employer, sponsored the trip. The company stated in a press release that the young Caymanian boxer deserves the opportunity to hone her skills.
“Our most valuable assets are the exceptionally talented people we employ and work with on a daily basis,” said Margot MacInnis, managing director of Grant Thornton Specialist Services. “…To represent our country at Commonwealth and hopefully future Olympic level boxing competitions is something we support wholeheartedly and is an incredible opportunity for Hepseba.”
Angel and Barnes are both expected to return to Cayman in December.
