Fire fighters are currently at the George Town Landfill exploring a hotspot that was flagged on the main mound earlier this morning.
In a brief update, a spokesperson for the Government Information Services said, officers were called to the landfill after smoke was seen by staff at the Department of Environmental Health.
“No smoke is currently visible and they are damping down any hot areas,” said the GIS spokesperson, adding that the fire service said this was “preventative and precautionary”.
As off 10am, DEH staff continued to excavate the site, which is said to be of “no risk to public safety”.
