Public Health reported on Christmas Eve that the total number of confirmed or suspected COVID-19 Omicron cases has risen to 103.
Genome sequencing has confirmed 44 people are infected with the highly contagious strain, while testing is being carried out on another 59 suspected Omicron cases, which includes 23 newly reported potential cases.
The interim chief medical officer, Dr. Autilia Newton, in her regular COVID update, said the 23 new suspected Omicron cases are among 71 total cases found among 459 PCR tests conducted on Thursday. Of the positive cases, 11 involved travellers and 60 were from the community.
This brings the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands to 3,605, six of whom are being treated in hospital.
In the Sister Islands, there are currently five active cases, according to the latest update.
As of Christmas Eve, 23% of the estimated population of 71,106 had received booster shots, while 80% had received two doses of a COVID vaccine, and 83% had taken one dose.

I’m sorry, but can someone please explain to me the process in which we can specifically diagnose a case as ‘Omicron’ rather than a previous strain.
My friend recently tested ‘positive’ but is completely asymptomatic, and is absolutely fine, but has been told he potentially has ‘Omicron’ and now him and his family might have to quarantine for 2 weeks.
Am I the only one who can see how ludicrous and nonsensical this all is????
This is getting absolutely ridiculous, and completely farcical. People wake up, nobody is dying from ‘Omicron’, stop letting the government strip you of your of your God given rights and liberties. If the masks and the vaccine, and boosters are so effective (as the media has falsely proporrei) then why are we still stuck in the same situation in which we were told the mask wearing and vaccines would resolve?
