Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 10,186 positive COVID-19 cases reported in the Cayman Islands, Public Health has stated.

The vast majority of the cases – 9,460 of them – have occurred since September last year, when the current wave of local transmissions began.

In her latest update on Thursday, 6 Jan., Interim Chief Medical Officer Dr. Autilia Newton reported that 4.74% of the local population – 3,372 people – currently have COVID. Of those, 3,144 are considered community transmission, and 228 are among travellers.

This chart shows the trend in daily reported cases since the start of 2021. Local transmission cases were reported for the first time in over a year in September.

This includes 466 new cases reported on Thursday, with 41 involving travellers and 425 from the community.

  1. Think about this. Over 3000 Caymanians have Covid. The 228 travelers had tested negative for Covid in order to visit the country. This means that they contacted the virus after arriving here and are now in quarantine.

Knowing that they stand a good chance of being infected with this highly transmissible virus and therefore having to spend the rest of their vacation in their hotel room/timeshare room, is it any wonder that thousands of potential tourists have decided to avoid coming to Cayman because of this ridiculous requirement that they be cultured three times during the first 10 days of their vacation?
How many asymptomatic citizens, going about their daily business, would be obliged to go into quarantine if they were subjected to cultures twice a week even if they were asymptomatic?

The government should follow what the majority of the rest of the world is doing and follow the science and recommendations.

  2. Totally agree, we were scheduled to be there for two weeks now but could not take a chance on getting a false positive from one of the 10 tests we would have been mandated to take, ridiculous!
So we cancelled and are looking for a new more friendly island to invest our monies in. So sad as we have been coming to GC since 1990.
