This year’s upcoming Stride Against Cancer will feature eight staggered early-morning starts to ensure the popular run/walk adheres to COVID-19 rules on the size of public gatherings.
The Cayman Islands Cancer Society’s annual event, which is the charity’s largest annual fundraiser, will be held on Sunday, 30 Jan.
Organisers are hoping this year’s attendance will top that of 2021, which was the most successful Stride to date, attracting more than 2,000 runners and walkers.
To comply with COVID-related regulations, which limit outdoor gatherings to a maximum of 250 people, this year’s Stride will have eight staggered starts, beginning at 5:45am and continuing every 15 minutes until 7:30am, on a first-come, first-served basis.
The 6.5-mile quarter-marathon race begins at Seven Mile Public Beach, with participants running and walking to the Wharf restaurant in George Town, and back.
There is also a half marathon-distance option, with a 6am start.

This year, even the event’s logo is showing the influence of COVID-19, with the familiar purple ‘strider’ donning a yellow mask.
In a statement, the Cancer Society noted that funds raised will help finance the charity’s many programmes and activities.
“Cancer touches everyone. What makes Stride Against Cancer different from other charity walk/run events is the connection that participants and volunteers feel with each other and with the cause,” it said.
As well as the main Stride event on 30 Jan., there are also ‘Mini Strides’ in North Side, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac.
Additionally, school children all around Grand Cayman will be taking part in their own Stride Against Cancer within their schools on Friday, 28 Jan.
“The event attracts people of all ages and from all walks of life and truly reflects the diversity of the Caymanian community. It is a family event with people coming together united in the common goal of striding against cancer,” the society said in its statement, and it invited individuals to take part or to join a team at their workplace to be “part of the largest walk/run in the Cayman Islands”.
Registration for the event, for which there will be plenty of prizes up for grabs, is $30 each, or $25 each if a group of 10 or more register together.
Anyone wishing to sign up for the event can register at the Cayman Islands Cancer Society office at 114 Maple Road, through email, online at www.caymanactive.com/stride, or by calling 949-7618.
