The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is looking to determine whether there is any criminal liability over the death of former UK police officer Nicholas John Keane, one year ago.
Keane, 63, fell to his death from the second-storey balcony at a George Town storage facility on Wednesday, 24 Feb. 2021. He had been a long-term visitor to Cayman and had arrived in December 2020.
Candia James-Malcolm, acting director of public prosecutions, in response to Cayman Compass queries, confirmed that a police file was submitted to the office of the DPP in January.
“[It] is being reviewed by senior counsel to determine whether any criminal liability arises,” she said via email.
The Compass, prior to James-Malcom statement, had reached out to the RCIPS for an update on the Keane investigation and was notified that a file had been prepared.
“An extensive police investigation was carried out in regards to this incident and a case file was prepared and submitted to ODPP for ruling. As a result, no further comments may be made in relation to this incident at this time,” the RCIPS said in an emailed statement.
Keane had retired from the West Midlands area of England and had been visiting the Cayman Islands on a long-term stay.
No arrests have been made in relation to his death.
Police at the time said that officers and emergency personnel went to Ashgo Street where it was reported that a man had fallen from the second storey of a storage building.
Police said the victim and two other individuals were standing on the outside balcony of the facility, which had a railing on the second storey, when the incident occurred.
Emergency Medical Services transported him to hospital where he was later pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
The Department of Labour, Health and Safety has also been looking into the incident, and the Compass has reached out to the department for an update on its investigation.
