An unvaccinated patient is Cayman’s latest COVID-related death.
According to the Health Ministry’s latest situation report released Thursday afternoon, the death occurred during epidemiological week 8, which ran from 20 -26 February.
This is the 18 death related to COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
No further information was released on the individual who passed away.
The report stated that positive COVID-19 cases have declined by 77 percent over the last four weeks, however hospital admissions remained “stable” with 7 admissions compared to 6 in the previous week.
A total of 17 patients, 1 more than the previous week, required inpatient hospital treatment.
Some six patients were warded in Intensive Care over the reporting period. Three of the inpatients were ventilated, while four required supplemental oxygen.
Of those hospitalised 82% were unvaccinated and 18% vaccinated.
There were 383 new cases of COVID-19 reported by Public Health. This was 169 cases fewer than were reported in the previous week (13 – 19 Feb).
However, fewer tests were conducted over the reporting period, with 2,581 tests done in Epi. Week 8 compared to 3,098 tests in Epi.Week 7 and 4,716 tests in Epi. Week 6.
Cayman’s total number of COVID-19 cases has neared the 20,000 mark with 19,811 being recorded at the end of Epi Week 8.
The booster vaccination and the campaign for ages 5-11 continues.
“Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect lives from COVID-19. Great efforts are needed to ensure that both the booster campaign and the children campaign reaches more of those who have not yet received a booster and as many eligible children as possible,” the report stated.
Total vaccinations stood at 59,530 for those having their first dose and 57,786 having received both doses.
Boosters stood at 21,282 at the end of the reporting period.
