A section of Cardinall Avenue between Seafarers Way and Albert Panton Street was officially closed to motor-vehicle traffic Monday.
The closure marks another step towards the overall goal of revitalising Cayman’s capital, a key strategy of which is to pedestrianise streets.
“Since the upgrade project kicked off on 31 January the project team, which is being led by the Ministry of Planning, Agriculture, Housing and Infrastructure, has undertaken all measuring and surveying requirements for the full Cardinall Avenue enhancement site as well as other ancillary work,” according to a statement from the George Town Revitalization Committee.
The section of Cardinall Avenue which runs between Albert Panton Street and Edward Street remains open to one-way traffic via Albert Panton.
The closure of the road was delayed by nearly a month; however, project coordinator Colin Lumsden said this was deliberate.
“We saw a last-minute opportunity to carry out the initial weeks of project work without closing the road to general traffic,” Lumsden, George Town Manager and Revitalisation Initiative Coordinator, said. “This also gave us time to carry out some more stakeholder meetings and we hope the ample notice, as well as the additional few weeks of vehicular access to Cardinall Avenue, has helped local businesses and the general public to prepare for the new flow of traffic into central George Town once the road closes.”
The entire road remains open to foot traffic for people wishing to access the various businesses.
