When financial constraints become roadblocks in educational journeys, scholarships can help students achieve their dreams.

There is a wide range of government and private scholarships available in Cayman, including, but not limited to, the below.

CAYMAN ISLANDS GOVERNMENT

The Ministry of Education, through the Education Council, offers an overseas scholarship for an undergraduate degree to a maximum of $30,000 per annum, for up to four years, per successful applicant, and a post-graduate award of up to $35,000 per annum.

Application period for Ministry of Education scholarships runs from 15 November to 31 Jan for overseas scholarships and 1 March to 30 April for local scholarships.

The Education Council in collaboration with other entities also provides scholarships in specialty areas specific to “Boat Building” – Gwen Bush Scholarship and “Maritime Industry” – The MACI scholarship.

CAYMAN ISLANDS DEPARTMENT OF TOURISM

The Cayman Islands Department of Tourism offers partial and full scholarships to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree in tourism.

WATER AUTHORITY

The Water Authority offers an annual scholarship of up to $35,000 for students wishing to pursue higher education or a vocational degree in fields of study relevant to the work of the organisation.

GOVERNMENT OF CANADA

Global Affairs Canada (GAC) offers the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) scholarships, which provide students from post-secondary institutions in eligible Caribbean countries/territories, with short-term exchange opportunities for study and research in Canadian post-secondary institutions, at college, undergraduate and graduate levels. ELAP scholarships are facilitated through institutional collaborations and student exchange agreements between post-secondary institutions in Canada and their partners in eligible Caribbean countries/territories. Deadline for 2022 is 29 March.

APPLEBY

The Appleby Legal Scholarship programme provides funding for the law degree course and subsequent professional practice courses at the Truman Bodden Law School, or an approved overseas university, and is worth more than US$100,000 over the duration of the degree and professional practice courses. The scholarship covers tuition fees, examination fees, as well as the cost of necessary textbooks, and recipients are also provided with a living allowance of US$2,400 per month and four weeks’ work experience each summer in one of the company’s practice groups. Deadline for applications closed on 1 March, although applicants can check details for next year’s scholarship.

BUTTERFIELD

Butterfield’s Undergraduate Scholarship is available to a Caymanian student, aged 17 to 25, commencing or already pursuing any course of study that will benefit the Cayman Islands. The award has a value of up to US$30,000 per year, tenable for up to four years. The deadline for application is the last Friday in March.

CAMPBELLS

Campbells offers an overseas undergraduate scholarship of up to US$20,000 for Caymanians, with preference given to legal applicants. Subject to meeting continuing conditions, successful applicants have the potential to be supported for the duration of their degree programme (three years), with the opportunity for additional support throughout their PPC, LPC (BVC), BPTC or equivalent. Applications close 1 April, annually.

CAYMAN ISLANDS MONETARY AUTHORITY

CIMA’s Thomas Jefferson Memorial Scholarship was established in 2007 in memory of the late Thomas Jefferson, former Financial Secretary and Leader of Government Business.

It offers an award of $25,000 per year for students pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in finance, accounting, economics or business administration. Recipients are required to work at CIMA during their school breaks, and on completion of their studies for a period of up to four years.

CG BRITCAY

The CG BritCay Insurance Scholarship has a maximum value of US$25,000 per annum for up to two years towards tuition, books, accommodation, airfare and meals. Caymanians or permanent residents with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher, who are undergraduate students entering their junior or senior year at an accredited university, and pursuing studies in insurance, risk management, actuarial science, mathematics, economics, business or commerce may apply. Deadline is 31 May 2022.

Aiden Watler, 2021 Dart University Scholar

DART

Dart offers two scholarships: one is for Caymanian high school students entering Grade 9/Year 10 that includes all school, book, and uniform fees at the local school of choice for four years of study; the other is the William A. Dart Memorial University Scholarship, which is awarded to a Caymanian student entering a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited overseas institution, with an annual renewal subject to academic performance. Both scholarships offer paid summer work experience at Dart as well as mentorship opportunities with Dart employees.  Application windows for both scholarships open in February and close 30 April.

DELOITTE

Deloitte awards scholarships to Caymanian students every year, typically those interested in accounting and finance, though other disciplines relevant to Deloitte’s service offerings are considered. Scholarship students gain professional, real-world experience through paid summer internships and are offered full-time positions upon completion of their degree and provided support for professional qualifications.

Applicants must have a minimum of 3.2 GPA, at least 5 IGCSE/GCSE/CXE passes with grade B or 2, a SAT score of at least 1,200 and demonstrated leadership skills and participation in community activities.

EY

The annual EY Scholarship is valued at up to US$30,000 per annum and is renewable for up to a maximum of five years until the recipient has completed the minimum educational requirements to qualify for a professional licence.

Successful applicants must be looking for career experience in a dynamic environment and enrolled full-time at an approved college or university; working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting, finance, computer science, actuarial science, mathematics, data analytics or other appropriate major with a strong academic record.

Applications are accepted on an annual basis from
15 Jan to 15 April.

All scholarship recipients, should they qualify, agree to pursue full-time employment with EY for a minimum period of three years after they have completed the educational requirements in their course of study.

INSPIRE CAYMAN

Inspire Cayman Training has established a non-profit Build Your Future Cayman Scholarship Fund to assist Caymanians aspiring to careers in construction, automotive, PADI and other technical jobs, gain access to professional development training.

BYFC applicants are high school students, high school graduates, unemployed, underemployed, incarcerated and recently released persons from the prison service.

Since April 2020, the BYFC charity has awarded $190,000 in scholarships, to 100 Caymanians and assisted 40 persons with the employment, internships, and apprenticeships.

KIMPTON SEAFIRE RESORT + SPA

Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa seeks to recruit passionate Caymanians between the ages of 16 and 20 who are interested in pursuing a career in hospitality through its Seafire scholarship. This offers an award for full-time study at an accredited associate or technical programme of up to US$25,000 per year.

Candidates must possess excellent character, work ethic, have a genuine interest in the hospitality industry, and have been accepted as a full-time student into an accredited associate or technical programme in a field related to the hospitality industry. Applicants must have successfully received their high school diploma and have maintained a minimum B average or GPA 3.5 over four years and be available to interview in person. Video interviews will only be accepted for candidates currently overseas. Applications close 15 April.

MAPLES

The Maples Group has awarded more than 100 scholarships totalling nearly US$6M in academic assistance, since 1994. The group’s scholarships are intended to provide assistance for appropriately qualified Caymanians who may have limited financial resources to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate degree courses at recognised colleges or universities. Scholarship funds are allocated for tuition, books and accommodation for the duration of the degree course. Legal scholarships are awarded up to US$40,000 per academic year; and non-legal up to US$15,000 per academic year.

Legal scholarship application closes on 1 March, annually, and non-legal on 30 April, annually.

MOURANT

The Chantal Whittaker Memorial Scholarship was established to honour the memory of a beloved colleague whose personal commitment to mentoring, fostering community spirit and helping young people to develop and grow, left a legacy, which the firm strives to continue. Mourant’s scholarship programme provides financial assistance towards the cost of study for Caymanian students who intend to qualify, or who are appropriately qualified and have been accepted into an accredited institution to pursue a career in law.

PWC

PwC offers scholarships for young Caymanians through their Career Development Programme. Applicants must have passed at least 5 IGCSE/GCSE/CXC including English and maths, with a minimum grade of B or 2, or a high school diploma with at least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent over the last two years of study and a combined SAT score of not less
than 1,500.

PwC’s CDP scholarship includes funding, coaching, networking and work experience. Awards are available for university degree programmes that prepare students for relevant accounting exams.
On-island or overseas studies are supported with awards up to US$30,000 per year. Registration ends on 25 March.

THE INSURANCE MANAGERS ASSOCIATION OF CAYMAN

Since inception, IMACs Scholarship Fund has raised over $4.9 million and supported 62 Caymanians pursuing further education. Successful applicants will be able to access funding to cover their tuition and living expenses, for a first degree, for a maximum of four years.

UCCI

The University College of the Cayman Islands offers
various scholarships designed to recruit and support
students who are driven to improve the Cayman
Islands in a variety of areas including liberal arts, social
sciences and/or the sciences.
Each scholar will receive financial aid to cover tuition,
fees, books and supplies to pursue an associate
degree or a four-year bachelor’s degree.

WALKERS

Walkers legal scholarships are awarded to eligible Caymanian students who have, amongst other things, demonstrated a high level of academic achievement and have an expressed interest in pursuing a career in law. Successful applicants are granted scholarships for law degrees, post-graduate conversion courses and post-graduate qualifying examinations, including the Professional Practice Course, the Legal Practice Course and the Bar Practice (Training) Course.
