Although weather prevented the Platinum Jubilee concert and event planned for Pedro St. James to go ahead on Thursday, 2 June, the Official Beacon Lighting was available to be viewed online by both island residents and people worldwide.
Host Mona Lisa Meade introduced the historic lighting with stories about Caymanian culture, the significance of the blowing of the conch shell, and images and video from Queen Elizabeth’s visits to the islands in 1983 and 1994.
Viewers were also treated to seeing and hearing appointed Town Crier Craig Merren announcing the beacon lighting earlier in the day in Heroes Square, and bagpiper Alastair Bird playing ‘Diu Regnare’ (Latin for ‘long to reign’), a piece composed by Stuart Liddell specifically for the Platinum Jubilee.
Governor Martyn Roper and Premier Wayne Panton lit the beacon at 9:15pm at Pedro St. James.
