Ganja smuggler jailed after being caught at airport

A woman has been jailed for a year and a half for attempting to smuggle 18 pounds of ganja into Cayman in hollowed-out compartments of her suitcase.

Toni Lee Danso, of Canada, arrived aboard a Westjet flight on 10 Feb. this year from Toronto, Canada. While going through Cayman’s immigration screening process, Customs and Border Control officers noticed what they described as a “strong odour of glue” emitting from Danso’s luggage.

“During the examination of the suitcase, officers observed what appeared to be packages of ganja concealed beneath a false bottom on both sides,” reads a summary of facts attached to the court document.

Eighteen heat-sealed packages of ganja, weighing a total of 18 pounds, were removed from the suitcase.

According to court documents, Danso “admitted to having lied to officers when initially confronted” and later told CBC and police she received the luggage two days prior to her arrival in Cayman from a man she knew only as Ruben.

“On conclusion of the interview. Ms Danso indicated that she does not know how the ganja got in her bag, [because] when she was departing Toronto, Canada, she was shown an x-ray of the bag by airport staff and the bag was cleared,” reads the court documents.

Danso made an initial Summary Court appearance one week after being arrested, at which time she entered a guilty plea to a single charge of importation of ganja.

She was sentenced last month by Magistrate Angelyn Hernandez to 18 months’ imprisonment, with a recommendation for deportation upon completion of the sentence.

The luggage and drugs were ordered to be destroyed.
