Caymanian scholarship recipients travelling overseas to study will be getting some financial help with their student visa expenses, the government announced Wednesday.

The Ministry of Education says it will provide one-time grants to Education Council Scholarship recipients who have been newly accepted to study in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Minister for Education Juliana O’Connor-Connolly explained that scholarship recipients accepted to study in the US and Canada will receive a $1,500 grant to cover visa fees and other expenses associated with travel to and from countries where the embassies are located.

As students heading to institutions in the UK do not have to travel off-island to obtain their visas, they will receive a smaller sum, of $500 towards the related costs.

“We are aware of the high costs students traditionally incur when preparing to study overseas for the first time,” O’Connor-Connolly said in a statement. “As these costs continue to rise, the Government aims to ease some of our students’ financial burdens by providing grants towards the costs of obtaining their visas.”

The ministry offered similar grants to students last year.

Applicants who have received a provisional scholarship will be notified by the Scholarship Secretariat Unit by email by Friday, 22 July 2022, with details on accessing the grants.

Grants will be awarded to those who have been approved for overseas studies, the ministry stated.

  1. Caymanian students with U.K. passports need no visa at all for studying in the U.K. surely makes more sense to simply require them to have a U.K. passport if applying for a CIG scholarship, and, if needed, support costs of that passport application? (Far less than $500)
