Scattered thundershowers continue as system crosses Caribbean

Forecasters say residents across Cayman can continue to expect scattered thundershowers for the next 24 hours, as a weather system makes its way over the islands.

Speaking with Cayman Compass, forecaster Avalan Porter said, “There is currently an upper-level cyclone passing over us as it makes its way through to the north-west of the Caribbean”.

In its evening forecast, the Cayman Islands National Weather Service called for temperatures in the upper 70’s, with winds coming out of the east-southeast at five to 10 knots.

“This system should be in the Cayman area until about tomorrow evening,” said Porter.

Other systems on the horizon

Further east, three subtropical systems have caught the attention of local and regional forecasters, as potential tropical storms. These systems pose no immediate threat to the Cayman Islands.

“As it stands now if all things remain the same the closest one to the Caribbean should reach the Cayman area by about Tuesday next week,” said Porter.

In a forecast issued at 1pm (local time), the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, stated that the systems closest to the Caribbean had a near 0 percent chance of strengthening into a more powerful system within the next 48 hours.

“Environmental conditions could become more conducive for slow development of this system in several days after it crosses the Windward Islands and moves across the eastern and central Caribbean Sea late this week into early next week”, reads the NHC’s weather bulletin.

The NHC says that the system has a low 20 percent chance of further development in the next five days.

Further still, on the coast of West Africa, another system is expected to make its way into the Atlantic Hurricane basin in the next 24 to 48 hours as it travels at a pace of 10 to 15 mphs.
