The Cayman national under-17 football team’s hopes of advancing to the 2023 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship were dashed after finishing third in the qualifiers in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Despite Cayman losing two out of their three matches at the Estadio Paramericano, head coach Dion Brandon told the Cayman Compass that he was happy with the results.

“Initially we hoped to finish in the top two of the group, but we are satisfied with the boys’ performance on and off the pitch,” Brandon said.

Cayman played their first match of the 2022 CONCACAF Men’s Under-17 Championship Qualifiers on 30 Aug., where they lost 1-0 to St. Kitts & Nevis. The local boys then took on the Dominican Republic on Thursday, 1 Sept., losing 6-0. Cayman notched their only win in their final match, beating Dominica 2-0 on Saturday, 3 Sept.

Brandon said the team gained exposure on a big stage and believes the “experience gained…will prepare them for the next [challenge]”.
