Category 1 Hurricane brought maximum sustained winds of 75 mph as it crossed Nicaragua’s coastline near Laguna de Perlas early Sunday morning.

The National Hurricane Centre warned of a dangerous storm surge along parts of the coast.

Life-threatening flash floods and mudslides are expected in parts of Central America Sunday and Monday.

Julia is expected to remain a tropical storm as it crosses Central America and enters the Pacific.

The Cayman Islands will continue to experience scattered showers along with moderate to fresh winds and rough seas for the next 24 hours as Hurricane Julia moves over central Nicaragua.

The National Weather Service advised small craft to exercise caution over open water, forecasting winds will be east to southeast at 15 to 20 knots and wave heights of 4 to 6 feet.

Skies will be partly cloudy to cloudy with a 60% chance of showers and thunder throughout the day and evening.

The conditions are expected to remain similar until Tuesday morning.
