The Cayman Associated School of Karate (CASK) will be sending a team to the AJKL Open and Miami Taikai next month in Miami, Florida.

The event, scheduled to take place on 12 Nov., will feature a team of seven athletes representing the Cayman Islands. Three boys and three girls will compete in the youth division, while a sole male will participate in the senior category.

“[This] is going to be a huge deal for us because it’s going to be the first time that we get to take a team of junior athletes,” Patrick Brendel, coach at CASK, told the Cayman Compass.

Noting there is only a single senior athlete on the Cayman team, Brendel said his priority is focusing on the “young Caymanian athletes” competing.

Last month, CASK sent a squad to the 10th Commonwealth Club Championships in Birmingham, England, where Zuzana Leitmannova captured a bronze medal for Cayman.

Looking ahead, Brendel pointed to the Cayman team taking part in competitions in 2023.

“Next year we are looking forward to the Pan American Championships and then the World [Championships] are going to come up shortly after that,” he said.

Representing Cayman next month will be Nick Young for the seniors, with Quinn Muspratt, Lucas Jackson, Charles Player, Angelina Player, Randy Whittaker and Cosette Brendel on the youth team.
