Three Jamaican men and a West Bay resident appeared in court on Monday on ganja-importation charges after police seized over 500 pounds of ganja in a weekend drug bust.
The three Jamaicans, ages 35, 42 and 57, have been remanded into custody, while the West Bay man, 40, was granted bail.
All four are expected back in court on 6 Dec.
A police statement on the incident, which did not release the men’s names, stated that shortly after 12am on Saturday, 5 Nov., while on patrol, the crew of a Cayman Islands Coast Guard vessel observed a fishing canoe-type vessel approaching the northern coastline of West Bay.
The men in the vessel attempted to evade the officers after spotting the Coast Guard, but it was stopped and brought under control.
Police said after an initial search of the suspects’ vessel several large packages containing ganja, totalling over 500 lbs, were found.
The three Jamaican nationals who were aboard the vessel were arrested on suspicion of importation of ganja.
The RCIPS said officers then conducted searches of the shore in the vicinity, and the fourth man, who was in possession of several fuel drums, was discovered.
He was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the importation of ganja.
