The investigation into the death of a 2-year-old girl on Cayman Brac last July remains open, police say, as they await specialist forensic test results from overseas.
Responding to Cayman Compass queries, police confirmed the probe into the incident is ongoing.
The girl, whose identity has not been officially released, was found unresponsive along the shoreline on 26 July 2022.
Police had previously indicated that the name of the child would not be formally released to maintain the “privacy of the family and individuals involved”.
A post mortem was carried out on the child, the results of which are now with the Coroner’s Court.
The Compass requested a copy of the report; however, the coroner said the inquest file is not ready at this stage.
It said that the request for release “will be held until such time that the file is ready for Inquest and the parents have been informed”.
The case has been one that many in the community have been keeping tabs on as the child’s disappearance was first reported by her mother, who made a plea for help on social media after she could not locate her daughter.
Police, in a statement last year on the incident, said emergency services had responded to the report of the missing 2-year-old at 5:16am on 26 July.
Joined by members of the public, personnel from Public Works Cayman Brac and the Fire Service, police began a search for the child.
The RCIPS helicopter was deployed and conducted aerial searches while the Cayman Brac Fire Service vessel looked offshore.
They later located the missing child’s body.
Police confirmed then that a sudden death investigation would be carried out in relation to this incident.
