It has been nearly one year since Caine Demetree Thomas, a former Crown witness, was shot dead in a secluded area along West Bay Road, with no additional arrests and no one charged for his murder.
His lifeless body was found in the early morning hours of 28 April 2022, with multiple gunshot wounds. Thomas, 21, a George Town resident and father of a 2-year-old, is said to have left his house around 11pm on 27 April for a pre-arranged meeting with men he is said to have known.
Police arrested two men aged 30 and 31, from George Town and Bodden Town, respectively, on suspicion of robbery and murder, 12 hours after the shooting. However, one week later, they were released on bail.
The Cayman Compass has reached out to the RCIPS for an update on whether the men from the prearranged meeting remain persons of interest in the ongoing investigation, as well as if the men taken into custody are still on police bail. No response was received by publication deadline.
Thomas was killed four months after being released from custody for a 2017 home invasion during which he and Elmer Wright, 29, together with Shane Connor, 46, tied up, beat and robbed an elderly couple at gunpoint.
Thomas eventually turned on his co-defendants and gave evidence as the Crown’s star witness in two separate trials, resulting in the conviction of Wright and Connor.
