After exceeding expectations in advancing out of the Americas Sub-Regional World Cup Qualifier in Argentina earlier this month, the Cayman men’s cricket team are hoping to prevail again, this time against tougher competition in the final round.

Cayman will face off against the likes of powerhouse Canada in the World Cup Americas Qualifier Regional Final, being held from 28 Sept. to 8 Oct., with the winner moving onto the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Prior to that, Cayman defeated the Bahamas, Argentina, and Panama to finish second in the standings – losing only to Bermuda, who they will get another crack at during the regional final.

Speaking with the Compass, Robert Cox, Cayman Cricket team manager, admitted that his team are underdogs heading into the games this fall.

“Cayman will face stiff opposition from Canada and Bermuda, both teams ranked above the Cayman Islands. However, with proper preparation and training, the Cayman Islands is expected to give a good account of themselves and is hoping to cause an upset among the higher-ranked teams,” Cox said.

This isn’t the first time Cayman has made it this far. In fact, back in 2018, the Caymanian squad secured a place in the Americas Regional Finals, but once there, the team lost six consecutive matches.

For Cayman, advancing out of the World Cup Americas Qualifier Regional Final would be historic, marking the greatest accomplishment to date for the local cricketers.

“There is much to play for,” Cox added.

The high-stakes tournament, which will take place in Bermuda, will feature Canada, Panama, Bermuda, and Cayman batting for a chance at Cricket World Cup glory.
