After winning only one of their first four matches at the T20 World Cup Americas Qualifier Regional Final, the Cayman Islands senior men’s cricket team won’t be moving on to the World Cup in 2024, as head coach Steve Gordon had hoped for.

Up until Thursday, Cayman had played four of their six scheduled matches – winning against Panama, and losing once to Bermuda and twice to Canada.

Ahead of the competition, Gordon had told the Compass that he believed the Americas Qualifier Regional Final was Cayman’s best chance to earn a berth at the World Cup but after game two, things took a turn for the worse.

Cayman got off to a good start batting their way to victory against Panama on 30 Sept., – winning by seven wickets (33 balls left). However, the 345 men would run into Canada in their second fixture on 1 Oct., where they would suffer a thrashing – losing by 108 runs.

That was followed by Bermuda winning by 53 runs against the locals on 3 Oct. Cayman played Canada again on 4 Oct., hoping for redemption but again falling short with the Canadians winning by 166 runs.

With Bermuda notching four consecutive wins, Cayman has been automatically excluded from the World Cup.

However, Cayman will still need to finish their remaining matches, starting with Bermuda on Friday, 6 Oct., and then Panama the following day.
