Beacon Farms cinema run extended

The Beacon Farms documentary that is giving audiences an insight into the work done at the unique farm in North Side, which offers a second chance at life and sobriety to addicts, is on an extended run at the Camana Bay Cinema.

Viewers who missed it first time round will get a second chance to see the film by Candy Whicker at the cinema every Wednesday evening in April and May.

The film garnered a lot of interest at its premier and subsequent viewings, leading to a demand for it to be reshown, Scott Haugh said, as well as attracting charitable organisations and individuals who want to help make the farm a greater success.

The farm employs recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, who have turned it, through their efforts and labour – and the help of some advanced farming equipment and technology – from a fairly barren plot of land into an arable site on which cigar tobacco is grown, as well as beets, breadfruit, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. It’s also a manufacturing plant for coconut oil and other products.

“We are creating an industry for previously unemployable people,” Haugh said.

There are plans to expand what is grown at the farm, and to make it an eco-tourism site featuring a little village of Caymanian-style cottages.

However, keeping the farm relatively small is vital to ensuring that the processes it uses – maintaining the quality of the soil and not utilising fertiliser or insecticide – continue as they always have, said Granger Haugh, Scott’s father.

The father and son founded the farm in North Side, which was previously owned by the family of former Speaker of the House Edna Moyle, in 2017.

Starting Wednesday, 5 April, at 7pm, the Beacon Farms movie will run on Wednesdays throughout April and May. Tickets can be purchased at the Camana Bay Cinema or online at fandango.com. 50% of ticket sales will be donated to Beacon Farms.
