The ninth annual Guardians Alive community wellness event on Saturday, 1 April, brought together hundreds of runners, walkers and supporters to raise funds for three of Cayman’s charities.
Funds raised will go to Meals on Wheels; Acts of Random Kindness Cayman’s Mentor-Educate-Reinforce (MER) programme for at-risk youth, in memory of Elliot J. Ebanks; and the Breast Cancer Foundation, in memory of Sister Edith Ebanks and in honour of all survivors/thrivers.
The annual gathering is the main fundraising event hosted by the non-profit Guardians Alive organisation.
This year saw the inclusion of the elite runners’ Break the Record (BTR) sub-events – a half-marathon and two-person half-marathon relay – as well as 2.5K and 5K runs.
The first male runner to cross the half-marathon finish line was Sean Lilley in a time of 1 hour, 24 minutes, while the fastest female home was Jalene Cruz in 1 hour, 33 minutes.
The half-relay was won by Nick Hemus and Greg Dinneen.
Teddy Mercer was the fastest male runner in the 5K, with a time of 17 minutes, 11 seconds, and Michelle Vinton was fastest female, completing the run in 19 minutes, 58 seconds.
After the runs, participants and supporters enjoyed breakfast cooked at food stations by an army of chefs – including professionals and young aspiring amateurs – at Seven Mile Public Beach, where the races began and finished.
Organiser Adonza Harrison said between 700 and 800 people, including volunteers, attended the event.
She told the Compass, “We are still raising funds and we’ll have about $4,000 raised for each charity by 28 July.”
