Although the first half of the year has seen some box office disappointments, such as the remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ and the fifth instalment of the Indiana Jones series, there have been some welcome successes.

‘The Blackening’ – a comedy horror film, directed by Tim Story – has garnered critical praise and seen a US$17million return on its US$5million budget. Top billing has gone to none other than Cayman’s own Grace Byers (née Gealey), who plays the role of Allison in a group of friends spending the weekend together. The location of a cabin in the woods is the perfect setting for a movie that winks at almost every horror cliché in the book, with laughs aplenty for those not typically keen on this kind of genre.

Film critic Richard Roeper gave it a rating of 3.5 out of 4, saying, “With the ensemble cast doing superb work, “The Blackening” is a horror comedy that packs a serious punch.”

Peyton Robinson of rogerebert.com awarded it the same score, adding, “An unapologetically Black comedy through and through. It maintains its wit and bite to the very end, boastfully serving audiences a hilarious film we didn’t know we needed.”

Byers is known for her work in the hit FOX show ‘Empire’ and Prime Video’s ‘Harlem’, which boasts a 98% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
