COVID-19 vaccines transition to seasonal shots

The Public Health Department says it will now transition from administering COVID-19 vaccines monthly to offering them seasonally.

This change comes as cases of COVID-19 decline globally and the last batch of Moderna vaccines on island have reached their expiration dates.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nick Gent, in a statement on the new policy issued Thursday, reminded the public that COVID-19 remains a significant threat to the elderly and clinically vulnerable.

“As we move into the next phase of living with COVID-19 we will change our routine immunization programme to include making available annual boosters of COVID-19 vaccine to the elderly and vulnerable alongside our influenza immunization programme,” Gent said.

The CMO, in a recent interview with the Cayman Compass, said COVID cases are on the decline in the community and there had been no new COVID-related deaths recorded recently.

The focus for healthcare professionals, he said in that interview, will be shifting to vulnerable people as the vaccine and booster have been keeping reported cases low.

There is no recommendation for a fifth booster.

Public Health, in its statement, said it will announce the new batch of COVID-19 vaccines when available on island, which will be similar to the approach taken with the annual flu vaccines.
