Investigation launched into prisoner escape during hospital visit

Police have said a “comprehensive investigation” has been launched into the escape of a prisoner during a hospital visit Friday night and his subsequent recapture.

The RCIPS, in a statement Saturday morning, said the investigation has been launched “to ascertain the details of the escape”.

“His Majesty’s Cayman Islands Prison Service will continue to work closely with the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service on the investigation,” the statement said.

In the brief statement, police said that shortly before 7:30pm on Friday 15 Sept., officers had responded to a 911 call regarding a prisoner who escaped the custody of prison officers while receiving medical treatment at Cayman Islands Hospital.

The RCIPS said on arriving at the scene police officers pursued the prisoner and “he was soon apprehended”.

Police said the man was arrested for escaping lawful custody.

The prisoner was transferred to the detention center for processing.

It is unclear where the prisoner was apprehended and how long after his escape he was recaptured.

The Cayman Compass has requested further details on the incident from the Prison Service, as there was no information on how the escape happened, nor if any staff were suspended pending the investigation.

When questioned by the Compass why the public was not alerted to a potentially dangerous prisoner on the run, a police spokesperson stated, “a public notification was not required as the prisoner was apprehended by the police soon after he escaped”.

The Compass has reached out to the Health Services Authority for comment on the incident and if there will be any changes to protocols when dealing with prisoners brought to the hospital.

We are awaiting a response to our queries from the the Prison Service and HSA.
