Update 7:10pm 15 Oct.: Following island-wide power outages Sunday evening, CUC has confirmed that its team extinguished a small electrical fire at its North Sound Plant.

In a statement Sunday night, CUC said the damage at its plant was limited to a control panel in the control room of one of the engine rooms.

“Emergency and Fire Services were dispatched, but the fire was already extinguished. The Company is grateful that there were no injuries to the CUC team and is currently assessing the damage and working to make repairs,” the statement said.

Original story

More than 16,000 CUC customers on Grand Cayman were left without power shortly after 5pm Sunday following island wide outages.

According to CUC’s map 174 outages have been logged across its grid stretching from West Bay to East End.

Jessica Pawlik, CUC’s Manager of External Communications, told the Cayman Compass Sunday afternoon that the company is aware of a number of outages across Grand Cayman and “crews have been dispatched” to work on restoring power.

Pawlik said she could not confirm the cause of the outages at this time or when power would be restored.

However the Compass understands that Fire Services were dispatched to CUC’s power generation facility in George Town after smoke was reportedly seen issuing from a panel in the control room.

Pawlik has advised the community to check the CUC outage map on its website for updates on power restoration in their area.

The map shows outages starting shortly before 5pm and quickly spreading through the grid.
