No one was injured when a fire broke out at the Immigration Detention Centre on Fairbanks Road earlier today, Monday, 23 Oct.
The eight Cuban asylum-seekers housed there were evacuated from the building while the Cayman Islands Fire Service extinguished the flames, according to a press release.
All of the men will be relocated to temporary accommodation.
The fire started at about 1pm, Customs and Border Control Service confirmed.
“There was significant smoke inside the facility and as such, it will remain empty for the remainder of today and tomorrow,” said the CBC release, which noted that an assessment will be carried out to determine the extent of the damage.
