Two pedestrians remain in stable condition at the Cayman Islands Hospital after they were injured in a hit-and-run collision on Thursday night.
The 49-year-old driver involved in the incident has since been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and remains in custody as investigations continue, an RCIPS statement said Friday afternoon.
The incident happened shortly after 9:30pm on Thursday.
Police said officers responded to a report of a collision on West Bay Road, just south of Lawrence Boulevard, involving two pedestrians and a Honda Fit.
The pedestrians were crossing the road when they were struck by the car, which continued travelling north along West Bay Road, police said.
Emergency medical services attended the scene and both victims were transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital.
“One of the pedestrians received injuries which appear to be serious but non-life-threatening, while the other received non-life-threatening injuries. Both remain in hospital,” police said Friday.
Police said shortly after the collision, the driver of the Honda Fit went to the West Bay Police Station.
A breathalyser test on the man returned a result of 0.194%, almost three times the legal limit of .07%, and the driver, a West Bay resident, was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
The RCIPS, in its statement, reminded the public of the dangers of drinking and driving.
‘If you drink, make a plan that does not involve driving. Officers will be out this weekend conducting additional road blocks and patrols, with a focus on prosecuting persons found driving under the influence,” it added.

What a sad indictment of our society that so many drivers are able to leave collision victims in their wake without any knowledge or care of their condition.
So often in these cases, timeliness of attention can make a huge difference. At the very least, a basic level of humanity would cause a person to stop and check on the victims.
I hope that punishments can be increased to deter this behavior.
My parents were the victims involved in this accident, I’m glad my parents are alive but unfortunately there are many victims that don’t make it out alive. Hopefully my parents are able to get justice, the way they deserve. God is on my side.❤️
