A man armed with a bladed weapon, who police believe is experiencing mental health issues, was arrested on the grounds of George Town Primary School Friday morning after fleeing from officers at the waterfront.
According to an RCIPS statement, police units responded to a report of a man with a blade acting “erratically and aggressively” on the harbourfront in George Town just after 7:45am.
He ran from police when approached and, pursued by officers, fled into the school grounds.
Police apprehended him there and disarmed him.
He was detained under the Mental Health Act.
“In the interest of public safety, the immediate apprehension of the man was necessary, and the incident was quickly contained,” the RCIPS said in the statement.
It added that no one was injured, and that “no children or school staff were directly present on the grounds at the time of the incident”.
