The nor’wester that struck Cayman earlier this month, as well as wreaking havoc on coastal properties, dumped an array of debris from land into the ocean, prompting one dive shop to invite divers to take part in a reef clean-up this weekend.

Mario Blanchette, manager of Eden Rock, in downtown George Town, is asking divers to help remove the debris from the popular snorkel and dive site on Saturday.

“There are lots of pipes, tyres, all kinds of garbage; there’s even a shopping trolley out there,” he told the Compass.

High waves smashed into the harbourfront in George Town during the storm on 5-6 Feb., causing damage to decks and sea walls, and littering the coastal road with sand and rocks. The strong surge even washed fish ashore, onto Seafarers Way.

Eden Rock and the outdoor bar beside it, Silversides, both sustained damage in the storm, but both have now reopened.

Blanchette says he is offering $5 air tanks to customers who want to take part in Saturday’s clean-up. Eden Rock will provide mesh bags that divers can take underwater with them for smaller debris. Any divers who wish to bring lift bags with them to help remove some of the larger objects are welcome to do so, he said.

Meanwhile, Silversides will be offering happy hour prices for those who have built up a thirst after their dives.
