With a flourish of her royal blue train, Miss Agriculture Queen contestant Esabella Medina showed off a Cayman Islands flag-inspired dress that was handcrafted by her mother. Agriculture Show attendees cheered on her, Michalia Powell and Jessie Douglas as they competed for the title on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at the agriculture fairgrounds.

Medina impressed the judges, who included Miss Universe Cayman Islands Ileann Powery and CARICOM Youth Ambassador Vanessa Burke, with her dress, confidence and thoughts on the importance of farming to the territory. She took the top title, with Powell coming first runner-up and Douglas coming second runner-up.

All three young women gave astute observations about maintaining cultural identity.

“Agriculture helps to feed a nation and helps to promote everything we do as a culture,” Powell said during the Q&A segment. “Without agriculture, there would be no culture.”

Hailing from West Bay, 14-year-old Medina said after winning that it was particularly rewarding to become the queen considering she previously won in 2019 but the title went to another contestant due to a mix-up. However, Medina said she was grateful for the experiences she had then and looks forward to wearing the crown this year.

In the princess competition, Jenesis Munroe took the top title, followed by Angelique Hall, Suriah Khan and Cassidy Rankin.

Emcee Tajae “Lady T” Grey said she was impressed with the talent this year, especially the young princess candidates who faced the day’s large crowds with courage. She said she hopes even more candidates enter next year.

“They presented themselves well, and I think that will encourage a lot more people next year,” she said.
