The Cayman Islands men’s national football team will travel to Europe to play their first official FIFA international friendly since 2009.
Cayman, ranked 197 by FIFA, will face Moldova, at 155, on Tuesday, 26 March, in Antalya, Turkey. Prior to that match, Cayman will play FC Turan, a professional club from Kazakhstan, on 23 March.
According to the Cayman Islands Football Association, both matches will serve as preparation for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, scheduled to kick off in June.
The last time that Cayman played an official FIFA-sanctioned friendly was 15 years ago, in a match against Jamaica, which Cayman lost 1-4.
In 2020, Cayman was scheduled to play Pakistan at home, but the match was cancelled after many of the Pakistani players were unable to secure visas, due to country restrictions.
Between 2015 and 2019, Cayman’s senior men played international matches, including against the Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Cuba.
However, those games were not approved by FIFA, CONCACAF or UEFA, and ultimately did not count towards the FIFA rankings.
