The Cayman Islands had hoped their international friendly fixtures against Puerto Rico would be competitive, but instead they proved to be disastrous after conceding 20 goals over a pair of matches.
In the first match, on 2 April at the Parque de Fútbol Juan César Cordero Dávila in San Juan, they lost 12-0 – the most lopsided defeat in Cayman senior women’s or men’s football history.
The Cayman men’s team’ s largest deficit was in their World Cup qualifier against Canada in 2021, where they lost 11-0.
The senior women previously played Puerto Rico in October 2007 during the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic qualifiers at which Cayman lost 4-0.
Puerto Rico, which sat at 103 in the FIFA rankings during their two-game series against Cayman, which is ranked 181, moved up 18 spots following the second match on Saturday, 6 April.
At that game, the Puerto Rican women delivered another one-sided thrashing, beating Cayman 8-0.

Martha Godet, the director of Cayman’s women’s programme, told the Compass that the results were based around giving young players exposure against higher level competition.
“It’s about development and building relationships with other federations…[and] preparing our under-15 team for the CONCACAF tournament this summer,” Godet said.
She further noted that it was a great experience for the team, in particular six players from the under-14 squad, who had an impressive performance in San Juan.”
