The Cayman Islands under-17 girls’ national team is ready to put their hard work and training to the test when they compete at the Ecedao Futbol international friendly tournament in Salinas, Puerto Rico.

The event, which runs from 23-27 May, will further prepare the team for the upcoming 2024 CONCACAF Girls’ U-15 Championship, set for August.

Cayman will travel with a team of 19 players – 14 of whom are part of the U15 squad.

Alexander Gonzalez, the Cayman Islands Football Association U17 head coach, told the Compass that his team has been working hard since receiving the invitation last month to take part in the tournament, with an emphasis on player development.

“I’m excited to see the players continue to develop through playing strong competition overseas,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez noted that he and the association’s main objective is to continue providing international matches for young athletes with the long-term goal to develop players step-by-step through the age-group levels to eventually form the core of the senior women’s team.

“Playing against strong opponents who implement different styles will help our players improve and I think we’ll start seeing positive results in the near future,” he said.

“We have a young team, there’s no doubt about it… We could not ask for a better way to prepare for that tournament than this friendly match and tournament in Puerto Rico.”
