Grammy award-winning recording artist Shaggy will be the headline performer at the Breast Cancer Gala, set for 5 Oct. at The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman.

Shaggy, the Jamaican-born reggae artist whose real name is Orville Richard Burrell, is best known for his hit singles ‘Oh Carolina,’ ‘It Wasn’t Me’, ‘Boombastic’, ‘Angel’ and ‘Strength of a Woman’.

In announcing Shaggy will be performing, the Breast Cancer Foundation said the 15th anniversary of the event “promises to be an exciting blend of entertainment, philanthropy, and celebration, all in support of a cause that touches countless lives”.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Shaggy as our headline performer for this milestone anniversary,” Beverly Edgington, chief administrator of the Breast Cancer Gala, said in a press release issued Tuesday.

“His involvement will undoubtedly elevate the evening, bringing joy and hope to our community as we unite to support breast cancer awareness and support. This year’s gala is not just a celebration of our achievements but a reaffirmation of our commitment to making a difference,” Edgington added.

Shaggy has performed numerous times in Cayman. His first musical appearance on island was in 1993 and he has taken part in various festivals over the years, including the Mardi Gras Street festival in 2014. Most recently, he brought a reggae fusion to music lovers in Cayman in 2019, performing at the Kaboo music festival.

Though the gala is not for another eight weeks, the foundation confirmed that tickets have already sold out, but added people can still support the event by donating a prize for the auction or volunteering on the night.

The gala is the main fundraising event for the foundation, to enable its breast cancer support services, early detection, community-driven initiatives and wellness programmes.

The Breast Cancer Gala has previously featured guest speakers Selita Ebanks, Hoda Kotb, Vinnie Jones, Bill and Giuliana Rancic, Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson, Joan Lunden and Cynthia Nixon, the late actress Shannen Doherty, and Mathew Knowles.
