The National Emergency Notification System app, known as NENS, will issue an alert as part of a planned exercise to mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan on Wednesday, 11 Sept.

According to a government announcement, the alert is a “routine operation, and there is no need for alarm or panic”.

The NENS app alerts users to emergencies, such as hurricanes, major fires, airport incidents, earthquakes or tsunamis, for example.

Once downloaded onto a phone, users can be alerted to incidents being monitored by Hazard Management Cayman Islands.

The government announcement about Wednesday’s alert acknowledged that the anniversary of the storm that devastated Grand Cayman in 2004 may be emotionally challenging for some individuals.

“If you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed, we encourage you to reach out to local practitioners for support. Counsellors are available at CayMind and can be reached at 1.800.543.6463,” the government announcement noted.

It encouraged residents to download the NENS app in advance if they have not done so already.
