Cayman residents are being advised to prepare for potential flooding later this week as a system in the western Caribbean sea continues to develop.
The broad area of low pressure could develop near the Cayman Islands later this week, the National Weather Service said Sunday night in a bulletin.
Local forecasters said the system had a 50% chance of development within seven days, potentially becoming a tropical depression near the Cayman Islands later this week.
At this stage, the Weather Service said, there is a lot of uncertainty relating to the exact location and the general strengthening of this system.
“These factors will determine what impacts would be experienced by the Cayman Islands,” it said.
However, the National Weather Service said that with the ground already saturated from the passage of Helene and tides expected to be elevated this week, there are some concerns in terms of potential flooding with this system.
“There is the potential for strong winds across the Cayman Islands, this would result in rough seas, especially in and around showers. A small craft advisory is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday, October 2 and 3,” the bulletin said.
The National Weather Service and Hazard Management Cayman Islands are urging residents to remain vigilant as a system continues to be monitored for further development, potentially near the Cayman Islands.
“While noting its similarities to the genesis of Hurricane Helene, it is important to note that some environmental factors are different, and these affect the general forecast of the system. As of 4pm September 29, models are indicating up to 4 inches of rain between October 2 and 3,” the bulletin stated.
Chief Meteorologist Kerry Powery, in a weather update Sunday night, said that Sister Islands can expect 2 inches of rainfall.
The bulletin advised residents to check their hurricane preparedness kits and secure their homes, particularly against flooding in low-lying areas.
“Additionally, in the eventuality of strong winds, homeowners and tenants are encouraged to make the necessary arrangements to secure dwellings and property. Residents are reminded to stay tuned to official updates from NWS, HMCI, and Radio Cayman for the latest information as this weather system develops,” the bulletin added.
The US National Hurricane Centre in Miami, in its Sunday evening advisory, said, that the broad area of low pressure located over the western Caribbean Sea is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms.
“Environmental conditions appear to be conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form around the middle part of this week while the disturbance meanders towards the west-northwest,” the NHC advisory said.
The system is expected to move northwestward into the Gulf of Mexico during the latter portion of this week.
It has advised interests in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and along the US Gulf Coast to monitor its progress.
