The Cayman Islands National Museum board has appointed the former director of the National Gallery of Jamaica as the museum’s new director.

Veerle Poupeye will be the first director of the museum who will also act as its curator, according to a press release announcing her appointment.

She replaces Peggy Leshikar-Denton, who was the museum’s director from 2011 until her retirement in 2022.

The release described Poupeye as “a distinguished curator, scholar and cultural leader who brings with her an impressive record of accomplishments, having previously held the directorship of the National Gallery of Jamaica, where she led transformative initiatives to enhance the gallery’s cultural and educational impact”.

It stated that her experience extends beyond administration, as she is a seasoned curator known for organising notable exhibitions throughout the Caribbean.

“In addition to her extensive curatorial background, Dr. Poupeye has made significant contributions to academia as a lecturer at the University of the West Indies and as a respected author with numerous books and articles exploring Caribbean art and culture.

“Her expertise and leadership are expected to bring a fresh perspective to the Cayman Islands National Museum, further enriching its role as a cultural and historical beacon for the Cayman Islands,” the release noted.

Susan Arch Parsons, the museum board’s deputy chair, welcomed the appointment.

She said in the release, “Dr. Poupeye’s extensive experience and vision align perfectly with the Museum’s mission to preserve and celebrate the unique heritage of the Cayman Islands. We are confident that her guidance will inspire growth, innovation and greater engagement with our community.”

Poupeye officially took up her duties on 4 Nov.
