Fire hits George Town auto shop

Fire and police investigators on the scene Tuesday

Fire and police investigators were Tuesday on scene at a popular George Town auto shop, after it suffered serious damage when it went up in flames the previous night.

Images showed flames ripping through Excite Motors on Monday, which sparked an evacuation from nearby buildings.

David Palmeri, the owner of the George Town business, watched in shock from behind a police cordon as firefighters tackled the blaze.

He told the Cayman Compass at the scene, “I have no idea what’s going on – I’ve just got here myself.”

Palmeri was with fire and police investigators at the smoke-blackened building on Barnes Avenue in Industrial Park on Tuesday morning, but declined to comment further on the incident.

The fire was reported to police at about 8:15pm on Monday by a member of the public.

Staff at nearby business AI Rentals, an events and party store, were ordered out of the area as firefighters battled the blaze and thick smoke blanketed the area.

It is understood the Excite building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and that no one was injured.

But sources at the scene confirmed the building had suffered extensive damage.

Thick smoke covered the area, which is largely industrial.

At least four fire service vehicles and several police cars were at the scene Monday evening.

Ambulances also attended, but it is understood there was no one injured.
