The anticipation is building as the Cayman Islands men’s national team gears up for its next two group play matches against Bermuda and Honduras next month in the CONCACAF 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
The team made history last year by securing a 1-0 win against Antigua and Barbuda in its first match for round two of the qualifiers. In that game, Trey Ebanks delivered a brilliant cross, and Joshwa Campbell put it away with a header, finding the back of the net.
This first ever World Cup qualifier win for the national team was secured on home soil at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex on 8 June 2024.
Earlier this year, the Cayman team travelled to Portugal where they played three friendlies with domestic clubs, including GD Prado, SC Braga and FC Vizela.
In a recent CIFA press release, head coach Joey Jap Tjong, whose departure from the national team was announced later this week, said, “That trip will go a long way in the development of our players and team.”
He added, “The level of football we played in Portugal will serve us well as we play these qualifiers.”
The Cayman squad, currently ranked 191 by FIFA, is in Group A among Honduras, Cuba, Antigua and Barbuda, and Bermuda for the qualifiers.
Honduras is ranked 75th, Cuba 167th, Antigua and Barbuda 159th, and Bermuda 168th.
Cayman will open the second round of Group A qualifying matches in Bermuda on 4 June, before hosting group leader Honduras in its group stage finale at 2pm on 7 June at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
