Repairs begin for public dock destroyed in a storm in 2021

All that remains are posts sticking out of the water, with a partially sunken boat beside it.

Work has commenced on the dock in Morgan’s Harbour, West Bay, which has been damaged and unusable since Tropical Storm Grace passed the Cayman Islands on 17-18 Aug. 2021.

“It is unsightly and doesn’t fit with the reputation of the Cayman Islands as an up-market destination, so we are grateful that the public dock is being fixed,” said Ron Hargrave, owner of the nearby Tukka West restaurant. “I know the boaters who will use it again are grateful, too.”

Hargrave added: “The Ministry of Planning and Infrastructure has been really communicative, which we appreciate. They have invited us along to meetings, and from what we have been told, they plan to replace the old wood pier with a concrete dock that will be much stronger and should be completed in about six months.”

A social media post from the ministry said the demolition phase is now underway: “Silt screens will be installed to protect the marine environment, and we kindly ask all boaters to navigate with caution when launching of retrieving vessels.”

The public dock also sits right beside the boat launching ramp in Morgan’s Harbour and floats have now appeared in the water nearby, which will mark the area for the installation of silt screens.

The ministry explained that the construction on the Morgan’s Harbour dock will pause for the Christmas and New Year period and resume in January 2026.

Over the past year, the ministry has repaired and improved several other public docks that were damaged or in disrepair in East End, North Side, George Town and West Bay.
